Going further with my travels in Thailand. After traveling to Chiang Rai, where we celebrated Christmas Eve, Chiang Mai, in which we went to an elephant park, and Krabi, where we visited different beaches. It is now time to move on to Koh Phi Phi Don!
Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi Don is one of the Phi Phi Islands of Thailand. It is located between Krabi and Phuket, which is great, since Phuket was our next stop. In case you are a Leonardo DiCaprio fan, one of his movies (The Beach) was filmed on one of the Koh Phi Phi islands. Anyway, we left Krabi pretty early, since the boat travel would be around 2 hours, and we wanted to be there a little early so we could chill on the island a bit. When we arrived at the island, we were amazed by the blue sea, white beach, it was just like the Gili islands, so beautiful!
First we had to find our hotel, which was a drama since the island had lots of ‘roads’, but only 3 of them were on Google Maps. So after about 1 hour we could finally dump our luggage and find a spot to have brunch. Luckily, we used tripadvisor and found pretty easy a nice spot. We ordered some yoghurts and toasts. After brunch we explored the island for a bit. When you have been on the island, you know that the island is basically formed as sort of an X, with all the lines being the land. In the middle of the ‘X’ you could find the centre, here you could walk to 2 of the beaches within a few minutes. The outerlines of the ‘X’ were sort of mountains where you mostly were unable to go. First we went to one of the beaches, where we wanted to walk over the beach to a side of the island, but there were so many crabs, TERRIFYING. Afterwards, we went to the other side, which was way nicer, you could easily go into the water and swim. Best of all, there were no crabs!
The next day we planned an early trip to Koh Phi Phi Leh, where the movie was filmed. Here we first visited Maya Bay, which is a nature park, and literally the most beautiful place I have ever been to. The water was so blue, the sand was so white, and there was a whole nature park behind the beach. After that, we visited some spots where we could snorkel, but there were not that many beautiful fishes to see. At the end of our trip we visited one of the things I was super excited about, namely, MONKEY BEACH. I had never been this close to wild monkeys, and it was amazing, they would just sit with you, or steal food from someone. I could watch them for hours.
LAST DAY OF THE YEAR. It started off by travelling from Koh Phi Phi Don to Phuket. When arrived in Phuket we first went to the old city of Phuket, where you could find a market. It was really nice with lots of food. Later that day we got ready to visit Patong Beach to celebrate our night. First we went to have a late dinner. It was really beautiful, because you could look over the entire beach and lots of wish balloons were lit, incredible. After dinner, ofcourse, we also lit a wish balloon. Actually it went pretty far. Furthermore, there was lots of music and a lot of stands with whatever you could think of. However, it was still different than New Years at home. At home they light fireworks the entire day basically, but here it was only around midnight. Anyway, it sure was one of the best New Years I had.
On our second day in Phuket we visited a viewpoint and a beach close to it, sadly, Geof did not feel well so we did not do a lot that day. Also it was supposed to be our last day in Phuket, but again, I booked the tickets wrong so we did not travel in the morning, but in the evening. Therefore, we decided to stay on our last day at a Beach Club, called Dream Beach, which was really nice. The sun was shining, we had music, food and drinks, the beach and a swimming pool. Could you imagine something better?
So in the evening we went back to Bangkok, here we again visited Waft me, and after that we visited the Grand Palace. It was really beautiful, but it was super crowded inside and since the women had to wear a sarong and men had to wear jeans, it was extremely hot. Therefore, we weren’t as long inside as we would have been if it was not that hot. However, it was still amazingly beautiful. Afterwards, we wanted to chill by the river, but we could not find a place where you were able to, because there are lots of boats crossing the river which means lots of piers. Anyway, we did find a restaurant where we drank something, we had a beautiful view over the river and on a temple. After relaxing for bit, we visited Asiatique, where we bought some souvenirs on the market and had dinner.
On the next and last whole day of our holiday we went to Emporium, a huge shopping mall in the centre of Bangkok and visited a place with smoothie bowls. At night, we went to a rooftop bar and WOW, this view was amazing. The whole city was lit, and you could say whatever you want about New York, but Bangkok doesn’t sleep either. The bar had amazing cocktails and we just enjoyed the view.
On the last day of our holiday, we had to rush a bit, since we woke up a little past noon and Geof had to be at the airport at 5. Therefore, we rushed to my university to print his boarding tickets, again visited Waft Me and had an oil massage. Then we packed really fast and got a cab to the airport. The trip to the airport was extremely stressful, because the entire city had traffic jams and we arrived just on time for his bagage drop off. Now I have to miss him again, but luckily not for 3,5 months. See you the end of the month!
