Nusa islands

This weekend was my first trip to another island of Indonesia, or well, other islands. I visted 3 islands in the weekend, Nusa Lembogan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. All of the islands are located just under Bali.

The first day we traveled after class to Nusa Lembogan, where we stayed the night. The next morning we went snorkeling at 7.30 and guess what, we saw wild dolphins!! We wanted to go snorkeling with mantas, however, we could not find them so we went to crystal bay. We saw some beautiful fishes.

After the snorkeling we rent scooters and went to the other island. At least that was our intention, we got lost on Nusa Lembogan. After asking other tourists, we found the yellow bridge which connects both islands. On Nusa Ceningan we had lunch (a smoothie bowl of course). Next we toured around the island and went to some beautiful beaches.

In the evening we traveled to the other island, Nusa Penida. Here we rented scooters the next day as well. Unfortunately, one of us got a flat tire in the middle of the jungle. We had no connection with our phones. After about one hour 2 boys of 14 or so helped us to get to a repairer. Then we went to another beach which was soo amazing.

The last day on the island we asked the hotel owner if he could bring us around to the hotspots. Here we went to the Kelingking beach (with the famous dinosaur) and to broken beach which has a nature made infinity pool. The roads to these places were shitty and we were sitting with the six of us in the back of a pick-up car. But it was a great day I promise you that (:

Finns Beach Club

Today we went to our second beach club, named Finns. The sun was shining, it was 30 degrees and we were on the beach. How great is life?

Finns Beach Club is located in Canggu and has just like Potato Head an infinity pool. It was so beautiful. We had a double bed between the beach and the infinity pool. We could see the surfers catching waves, while the vacationers were enjoying a drink in the water.  Furthermore, the music was so relaxing. In this place, I had my first real coconut, with the water and everything. I have to admit, it is not really my thing.

After we went to Finns Beach Club, we had dinner in a place close to Finns, named Panama. The building looked like a basic Santorini house, while the back yard looked like the typical American back yard. They had this round pool with the striped beach chairs.

After dinner I went (for the first time) with the scooter taxi. I was scared at first, but I am glad I did it. I saw so much from the island.

Tomorrow I am going to 2 small islands underneath Bali, called Nusa Lembogang and Nusa Peridan (I think). And it has this great blue water.  I am so excited to stay there for the weekend.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Pura Tirta Empul

Yesterday we went to a temple, close to Ubud which is about a 1 hour drive from Denpasar. This temple, called the Pura Tirta Empul (Water Temple), was fantastic. The rare thing is that it is still in use. You could see people praying and going into the holy spring.

The temple has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2012 and the inscription reads:

”The Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: The Subak System as a manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy, consist of Supreme Water Temple Pura Ulun Danu Batur and Lake Batur, Subak Landscape of Pakerisan Watershed, Subak Landscape of Catur Angga Batukaru, and Royal Temple of Taman Ayun has been inscribed upon the World Heritage List of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Inscription on this List confirms the outstanding universal value of a cultural or natural property which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity.”

Furthermore, they had strict rules if you wanted to enter the temple. Starting with the fact that everybody had to wear a sarong (as you can see on the pictures, I am wearing one as well). It was prohibited to wear shorts as well. Moreover, as a girl I had to tie my hair, and I could not enter the temple if I was on my period. Of course, it was not allowed to enter the temple wet, and to climb on the holy buildings.

At the exit of the temple, there were multiple small markets in which you could buy traditional clothing or souvenirs. Here I bought my own sarong. Afterwards, we went to the city of Ubud to have lunch.

My first schooldays in Bali

I came to Bali to study… Yes to study in paradise.

So a couple of days ago I had my first schoolday, starting at 10AM. Every day a bus picks us up to bring us to our university and bring us back. When we arrived at the Uni, we started to walk towards a typical Balinese building, in which we had to walk up the stairs. When the doors finally opened, a sort of orchestra started playing music, created on weird instruments. To be honest, I did not really enjoy the music, because it was kind of random and sometimes really loud with high tones. Anyways, after a couple of songs, the tutors were introduced. Afterwards the orchestra started playing again, this time with 3 girls dancing some ‘flower dance’ as it was called, showing the beauty and purity of life.

When the girls finished dancing, a traditional ceremony was  held, with a huge rice tower which showed life. One of the tutors had to cut it and give it to a student as a symbol of success in personal and professional life. After this, we had some snacks in our coffee break, followed by some smart pitches of companies. These companies were basically for leisure activities on the island, such as surfing, clubbing, biking and a waterpark.

Afterwards, we had a small introduction lecture of what we could expect in our Event Management programme of this module. In the evening we had dinner together at the beach, followed by a brief party.

The next day, my schoolday started with a lecture, of me and some other students dressing up in clothing from an Indonesian island (see picture above). The island of which I was clothed was Minang, I’ve never heard of it before. We had to come up to the stage and a tutor started explaining the clothing. Apparently, the woman is superior in Minang. Afterwards, the other students had to come up to the stage, and she talked about their clothing as well. Finally, she started talking about some cultural matters. At the end, it was showed to us how to wear the clothing to the temples (for if we want to visit some).

Later that day I met my classmates, who were really nice. We spoke about some small matters in the event management industry. In the evening we had dinner in a Warung, which is a small local stand or restaurant. This was the first time I ate Indonesian in Bali. I was surprised, it was really good!!! I had some chicken with sweet-sour sauce and rice (I don’t recall the name of the dish).

On wednesday we were off, so we had plenty of time to do whatever we wanted. First we went for lunch to Shelter, where I had my first acai bowl ever! And yes it was delicious. After that we went shopping in Seminyak, where we ended at the beach.

The semi last schoolday was quite boring, we started around 12.30pm until 2pm. All we did was basically presenting an event of a choice

On friday, a fieldtrip to a Balinese village was scheduled. When we arrived at the village, everything was so different from Denpasar. The houses were different, especially since they were sleeping outside. We got to check out the houses and had to make art with leaves. Afterwards, we got the chance to make rice cookies ourselves, try some cookies and try some fresh coconut (which the man cut in front of us real quickly). Everyone in the small village was so sweet.

When we were finished looking around in the village, we started going to the rice fields. Here we got the chance to ride with cows  through the rice field to make it more fertile. One of the cows in front of me had to poop when I was behind them, which was pretty disgusting. Later, we planted some rice ourself.

After going into the rice fields we went into what we call ‘the jungle’. It was just a tiny jungle, in which a man showed us how they climb palm trees here. It was the typical documentary type of climbing a tree. After he showed us, some students tried it, but many of them failed.

In the afternoon we had dinner with typical Indonesian food. After that we had to travel back to Denpasar where we went to the swimming pool.

I think this week of uni was pretty much fun. How was your first week of uni?

Most of you knew that I was going to travel to Bali in the beginning of September. Last friday I started my journey to the other side of the world.

We traveled to the airport by car, with my mom, stepdad and boyfriend. The farewell was awful. My mom and I had both tears in our eyes. When I finally came to the tax free zone, I had to go immediately to the gate, because within a few minutes it would open.  When arriving to my seat, a window-view one, I got a blanket, a pillow, some ear plugs and socks. I was amazed of what we all got. Anyway, the flight was horrible, I only slept for a couple hours and could not really do something, so it was just waiting to arrive.

After the stopover at Jakarta I finally arrived in Bali. Luckily, all my luggage was ok. When getting out of the drop off, there was a man with a name tag waiting for me. He brought me to the hotel we are staying at. I was so amazed of how the Balinese handle traffic. The roads are overly full and there are barely any rules for driving. When I got to the hotel I started to freshen up a little and then we went for dinner in a steakhouse across the road.

The next day we went to a beach club in Seminyak, called Potato Head. It has this great infinity pool and a great view.

Right now I am in my hotel room, waiting till it’s time for dinner.

Violet Hamden

‘Time flies when you’re having fun.’

That’s what they say right? Well I definitely agree with this quote.  As you might have seen in previous blogposts or on my Instagram page, I looove watches. They are a great accessory and it is very useful (only if you don’t use your mobile phone to check the time and date).

Today I received a new watch from Violet Hamden. Violet Hamden exists for a conscious lifestyle. They want you to live your life and create memories. Currently, they have two collections, the Nowness collectiona and the Day & Night collection. Furthermore, they created a jewelry collection in which you can find several minimalistic bracelets, earrings and necklaces. These are perfect to combine with your watch. If you prefer some variety from time to time, these bracelets are interchangeable.

When you purchase a Violet Hamden, you will receive a watch (obviously). However, the watch comes with a journal in which you  can write your own stories. Just like they describe on their website ‘ You cannot catch time, we think back to a certain feeling, memory or a dream. Be aware at what time you get up in the morning, when you perform your rituals, when you meet new friends, and when you explore the world.’

Furthermore, when I hear Violet Hamden, I hear quality. The watches are hand-made by specialised watch makers with passion for their job. The quality of the material is very well. Moreover, the jewellery has been made perfect in every detail. And above all, it is fashionable and payable!

The watch I retreived was from the Nowness collection, the Nowness Rose Evening Rosegold. This collection features 7 watches. Furthermore, this collection consist of 4 different colours mesh bands. The watches of this collection are shown below.

The Day & Night collection features 23 watches, it features 6 different colours of leather bands. The Day & Night collection shows elegance.

Currently, they have 2 kinds of bracelets, the moon and stones bracelet in either silver or gold. As shown on the pictures, I retreived the moon and stones bracelet in silver with my watch.

As said before, I chose for the Nowness Rose Evening Rosegold watch since I already own a silver watch and I was doubting before between the silver and the rosegold watch. Therefore, my decision was easily made. Furthermore, the watch shows class and fits to a huge part of my wardrobe. Thus, I find it easily to combine the watch with my clothing. The watch is lightweighted and very minimalistic, which I really love. Furthermore, the watch and bracelets come with a beautiful box with the company’s name on it. When I don’t wear the watch, I always attempt to put it back in the box.

In case you want to see and try the watch first, you can go to your local Brandfield store in Amsterdam or Groningen to discover the beauty of Violet Hamden. Of course, you can also shop them online exclusively at Brandfield or at the official Violet Hamden website.

You have probably noticed that I love the beach. And what do I love more than the beach? Exactly, my dog.

Since I am leaving to Bali in 2 weeks, my mom thought it was a nice idea to visit one of the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands, namely Ameland. I wanted to travel to Ameland with my dog for about 3 years now and it finally happened. Now you can wonder why Ameland? Well my mom knew this island more than the others, since she visited it a couple of times. Furthermore, we considered the distance too.

To be honest I did not remember anything from the island anymore. I only visited it about 13 years ago once. The only thing I knew was from what I read and general knowledge. To get to the island, we took the ferry. Once there, we went to the bike rental to rent two bikes, one with a dog basket, because my little friend is getting sicker and sicker every day :(.

After we rent the bikes we went biking and my dog literally loved it. She always loves to have the wind in her hair and ears. We went biking towards the beach, which is of course everywhere, but we had to find a quiet spot so my dog could walk freely. Unfortunately the water was quite cold so we did not go for a swim..

After being at the beach for a while we went back to cycling. Afterwards we went to a terrace and had some dinner. We had dinner quite early since we had to catch the last ferry. On the way back home my dog was sleeping the entire time. Guess she had a nice time like we did.

JORD wood watch GIVEAWAY

”The value of a watch is not in being able to tell how much time has passed, but in being aware of the need to make that time count. Moments are bigger than minutes, and your watch should tell more than time.”

As you might have noticed, i love watches, i really, really loove watches. I can’t remember the time that I went out without a watch on my wrist. It’s not that I need it to check the time, it’s just that I find it comforting having it on my wrist and in knowing that there  is still plenty of time ahead of me. The watch I chose is the dark sandalwood and smoke from JORD’s frankie series. As soon as I put it on, I fell in love. As you can see, it’s absolutey beautiful and minimalistic, within short time I’ve been wearing my JORD watch. It’s incredibly lightweight so it feels amazing on my wrist as well. It truly is a statement timepiece.

I would definitely reccommend a JORD watch to anyone. And if a new watch is on your wishlist or on the wishlist of someone special, today is your lucky day!

Back in the Costa Brava

I just came home from my third holiday in Spain this year. Obviously, it was as incredible as always. This time, I visited the Costa Brava. We were staying in a rather big village called Playa d’Aro or in Catalan Platja d’Aro. Lots of people, especially the Dutch, French and Germans, visit this place within the summer months. It has a great boulevard with lots of restaurants, bars and so on. Moreover, the ‘village’ has a beautiful city centre with some typical Spanish shops such as Bershka, Mango, Massimo Dutti, Stradivarius, Zara and so on. I was so glad since these shops belong to my faves and they all had sale!!

In this holiday, we actually did not do lots of activities. Basically everyday we went to the beach or swimming pool in order to get a tan. However, on the first two days the waves from the sea were so high that they thought it was too dangerous. Thus, they hang up the red flag. It was so much fun to go into these high waves and just lay there on our air mattress. Furthermore, some nights we went to the city centre for dinner and for some shopping. Furthermore, the night life in Platja d’Aro is great. There are several clubs with different kinds of music.

On our semi last day we went to the city of Girona. Since I already visited this place a few months ago, I showed my family around the old city. We went into the Cathedral and the Basilic of the city. At the end of the day we had some tapas for dinner. I have to say, I looove Spanish food.

Finally, our last day included a canyoning trip to the French Pyrenees. Let me explain what it actually is. You travel with a group of people, always with one or two guides, to a place with a river in the mountains. There, you climb towards the river and you will follow the water of the river. Since there is no way back, you have to jump from different heights into the water, you will slide from natural slides, and you will abseil. This is exactly what we’ve done. We saw incredible places with enormous waterfalls. The best things is, it is all natural, there are no signs of human engagement in the place and this makes it even more great.

The next morning we already went on our way back to the Netherlands. Again, we stayed the night in France.

My next trip is to Bali in a few weeks, what is yours?

xx Nath

A day in France

You might have noticed, I love traveling. I have been in The Netherlands for only 3 days and am already back to traveling to Spain. This time the destination is not an island, but the main land, namely the Costa Brava.

To get to the Costa Brava, we have to travel through different countries. Starting with Germany. The entire trip through Germany I was asleep, so I barely saw anything from the country. I did not mind that I didn’t see anything, because it is basically all the same, at first just like the Netherlands, and later on it has a few hills. The next country was Luxembourg. We stopped in the middle of Luxembourg for a sandwich. I got to drive shotgun in France. I literally love the country. It has this romantic, ancient vibe which is super cute. Furthermore, the landscape is extremely beautiful.

Arriving in the middle of the country to our B & B, after again, a powernap. I was surprised that the B&B was an ancient villa. When entering the building, there was this great dinner room, which gave me this Napoleon feeling (I have no idea how to describe it in any other way). A little french man walked up to us and tried to speak in English, it was hard, but we understood him. He led us to our rooms. One consisting of a canopy bed, furnished with some old furniture. The other room was upstairs, which is seen in the picture below. This room was more ‘modern’ furnished which I really liked. Both rooms featured a modern bathroom with a rainshower.

It was kinda sad that we didn’t have enough time to explore the area a bit, due to our next journey to Spain tomorrow. However, I will definitely visit the country many times more.
